Overview
Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis) is native to North America and once grew from Vermont to Arkansas.
Currently, most of the goldenseal that is available on the market is cultivated in Washington and Oregon.
Widespread use has resulted in over-harvesting in the wild and endangerment of the long-term survival of the species, so it is important to use only cultivated Goldenseal.
Golden seal has a long history of use in the United States as a medicinal herb.
It was initially used by Native Americans and gained popularity with the eclectic medical movement from the 1850s to the 1940s.
It has been used for gastrointestinal disturbances, for immune support, to stimulate the function of the liver and as an eye wash.

The key compounds in goldenseal are the alkaloids; berberine and hydrastine.
Berberine is also responsible for the root's vibrant yellow color.
(Native Americans actually used goldenseal as a dye in addition to it's other uses.) Our Goldenseal is commercially cultivated and is standardized to 5% total alkoloids.
It is available in 60 and 120 vegetarian capsules that are 250 mgs each.

Dosage
Typical dosage is from 125-250 mgs, two to four times a day.

Cautions
If you are pregnant or lactating consult your health care practitioner prior to using Goldenseal.

If you have a cardiovascular condition including congestive heart failure, arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) or high blood pressure do not use berberine containing products unless closely monitored by a health care practitioner.

Individuals with jaundice, especially jaundice infants, should not use berberine containing products.

Higher doses of Goldenseal (2,000 to 3,000 mg) may cause decreased heart rate and a decrease in the function of the central nervous system.


A published review of berberine literature notes the following side effects can occur: decrease in blood pressure, shortness of breath, flu-like symptoms, stomach upset and possible heart damage.

Long-term use of Goldenseal in high doses may interfere with the metabolism of several of the B Vitamins.
